Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Michigan

I would like to know if a utility company can legally put my spouse's past debt, into my name and make me assume responsibility for it. This is in the state of Michigan.

Spouses are not liable for each other's debts in the state of Michigan. I believe that the doctrine of necessities was eliminated in 1997. However, if you are both benefiting from the utilities, they may be able to go to court and claim that you are unjustly enriched by receiving services and not paying for them.
