Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
3rd degree fraud 1st offense
Hi my name is--name removed-- My 2 friends and i got caught at JC Pennys for shoplifting, we we under the 200 dollar mark and we have a court date comming up on the 16th. We were in the Kent Wood area. I'm very nervious on what we are going to get charged for, what i should do to prepare myself. We are all 18. And we all have a clean record. What are the chances of us going to jail? Also what else could they do to us? Please help me i'm getting really paranoid!
Thanks,
Candace

Re: 3rd degree fraud 1st offense
None of you are going to jail. There is also a way to continue to keep your records clean. All of you will be getting a letter from Penny's attorneys in Florida demanding that you pay $200 each.
If you decide not to get an attorney before you all go to court (usually one lawyer can represent all 3), you should plead not guilty and ask for a court appointed lawyer who should know enough about the $200 civil demand and your obligation to pay it.
Otherwise be polite, dress appropriately (no jeans), and be on time.
