Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

i stole some merchandise in lansing mi not over twenty dollars from a store called l and l. i went to another store and echanged the item without telling anyone but a sales associate saw me with it. they called the cops car was searched and merchandise was found. receieved letter stating to attend court for third degree retail fruad.
