CTN = criminal tracking number. The Criminal Tracking Number (CTN) is a 12-digit number assigned by the prosecuting attorney's case database system that links a defendant (or co-defendants) to a specific case. The CTN appears on all court and prosecutor documents and helps the prosecutor and court to keep track of case information. An example of a CTN is "23 16 001234 03". The first 2 digits identify the county of prosecution (Eaton County is #23); the 3rd and 4th digits are the year the case was issued (16 = 2016). The next 6 digits are an annual sequential number (first case in 2016 would show "000001". The last 2 digits are a suffix that identifies which co-defendant the paperwork is for ("03" means this is the 3rd co-defendant; the suffix tracks each co-defendant individually. If a case has no co-defendant, then the single defendant's suffix is "01". Some jurisdictions prosecute multiple defendants on a single complaint/warrant, so in this way each co-defendant's charges can be identified better using the suffix system. [Another similar term is a "TCN", which is a Transaction Control Number. The TCN is an 11-digit alpha-numeric identifier that specifies which Livescan unit was used, the year, a sequential number, and then a letter. It is all assigned by the Livescan fingerprinting system. The charging document and the court's case disposition information that is sent to the state police for entry into the defendant's criminal history link together the CTN (which charged event is this?) with a TCN (a specific person who's been fingerprinted).] The state police's criminal records reporting manual may help you further. It is found at https://www.michigan.gov/documents/msp/CRR_Manual_2011_351577_7.pdf .
