It's called HYTA and it's intended to give you a break by not having a major felony on your record which will keep you from getting a decent job. Pay attention because HYTA is not guaranteed.

At least get a court appointed lawyer. This is not a do-it-yourself.

HYTA = Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. If you were 17-20 yrs old when the crime happened and it's not a traffic offense, major controlled substance offense or life offense, you may be eligible to apply for youthful trainee status. If the judge grants it, in his/her discretion, you're put on probation and the court has the authority to dismiss the charge at the end of a successful probation term. If you ever lose that status through probation violations, then the conviction stays on your record.

You still must pay full restitution to the victims as a condition of this probation.

As one of the previous responses said, get an attorney (even a court-appointed attorney) so the best arguments can be made on your behalf (including marshaling together supportive records, documents, letters from people who know you well, etc.).

HYTA (aka YTA) is a good for you IF you are planning on admitting guilt. You should consult with a good criminal defense attorney to evaluate your case before doing anything. Just because you are offered this ststus doesn't necessarily mean the Judge will give it to you. Be cautious.
