Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Charged With Vehicle Tampering
A cop says he saw me jiggling door handles of cars in a parking lot. He arrested me for ''vehicle tampering'' is that really against the law? I'm in grand rapids michigan.

Just because you were charged with a crime doesn't mean you are guilty of anything. FIGHT THIS charge with a tough, experienced attorney.

Yes, tampering or meddling with a motor vehicle is a misdemeanor. However, I think the cop may be pushing the envelope in your case. Talk to an attorney in your area.
Re: Charged With Vehicle Tampering
Prosecutors decide what charges should be issued, not police.
Your case sounds more like an Attempted Breaking & Entering of a Motor Vehicle With Intent to Commit a Larceny, which could be a misdemeanor or felony depending on what the value of the items are that the prosecution theorizes you were intending on stealing.
