when convicted of multiple crimes, does the defendant have to be sentenced seperatly for each offense?

Yes, you get individual sentences for each charge you are convicted on. But the usual rule is that all of the counts you are being sentenced on that day will have concurrent sentences (all at the same time), not consecutive (stacked; serve #2 after #1 is over). One notable exception is a crime called felony firearm where that 2-yrs prison term is served first, and then the other counts begin after that. Also, other statutes allow for consecutive sentencing between some other charges, such as a conviction for home invasion first degree where additional counts can be ordered to be served consecutive to that count.
