If cops find you over on legal limit of marijuana, how long do they have to charge you?

The statute of limitations is 6 years after the offense date. But you don't say how long it has been (days, weeks, months so far?). Some delay in drug cases can be attributed to getting evidence tested at the state crime lab. This can add weeks/months to the time line. Some prosecutors will issue on marijuana cases based on the police office's field test of the plant material (because that provides probable cause evidence), but other prosecutors want the actual lab testing first.
