Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Trying to determine court of conviction for sex offender
I have recently discovered that a relative is a registered sex offender, and am trying to obtain the court file. However, I learned that I must contact the court of conviction to get it, but have not found a way to determine in which court he was convicted.
Do you have any advice?

Re: Trying to determine court of conviction for sex offender
Two sources might give you some leads. One is free, the other costs $10.
Free: The Michigan Department of Corrections' web site (http://www.michigan.gov/corrections) has an "offender search" section, called O.T.I.S. (Offender Tracking Information System). Go to their web site, and click on Offender Search, read the instructions and off you go. You plug in the person's name, and as much identifying information as you can. Sometimes less info is better, because things have to match exactly (especially re: name spelling). The database maintains info on folks in prison and on parole. (Once off parole, the public info is blocked.) But you get information about the convictions, including the county and case number, the sentence, probation/parole terms, sometimes even mug shots.
$10.00: The Michigan State Police web site (http://www.michigan.gov/msp) has "ICHAT" (http://mi-mall.michigan.gov/ichat), where you can search for a person's state-wide criminal conviction record. You need a credit card. Info is mailed to you in a week or so. If they find him, you'll get information about the crime, date and court where the conviction occurred.
Once you get the right court, the court file should be open to you but it will not have the police report. You'll have to get that from that county's prosecutor or the investigating police agency. (The ICHAT result may have the police department and their complaint number identified. If not, the charging document in the court file would.)
