Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Drugs.

I live in a house where drugs are now at on a regular basis. Everyone here has a child including myself and I just want to do whatever I can to ensure that i won't go down with them if they were to be caught with the stuff at the house (I'm getting my degree to be a teacher and can't have this stuff on my record). What can i do to ensure I won't be involved in their mistakes if moving out isn't an option? Should I go to the police with this concern? By doing that, would I only be setting myself up for things to also come my way as well?

Re: Drugs.

You are in SERIOUS danger and your child is also in danger. Find another place to live right away. Even if you have to move to a shelter, get out of that drug house immediately.

Re: Drugs.

I agree with Mr. Kronzek's reply (possibly a first). You will be judged by the choices you make, especially regarding whether you are endangering your chil(ren).

Living around drugs is dangerous to your child(ren) because they could inadvertently come upon the drugs, and kids love to eat/swallow stuff they can reach. What if that "stuff" was cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine???? If the ingredients for "meth" are also in reach of the children, they are in great danger because pretty much all of it is TOXIC.

Also, the drug 'culture' can bring violence into your home because drug users/dealers get 'victimized' / ripped-off frequently (cash, drugs, etc.). And drug users/dealers frequently have guns. You are exposing yourself AND your child to danger every day!

Could you be charged with a crime? Unlikely, but possibly. If you are doing anything to aid or encourage the drug operation, or if you receive / benefit from the proceeds of the drug operation, you could be charged as an accomplice, etc.

More likely, Children's Protective Services will get involved. If police raid the house and find you and your kids there, they will call in CPS. Or a random citizen could call CPS that "kids are living in a crack house". A CPS investigation will open up. Possible outcomes are that the Department of Human Services will help you and your children find alternative living arrangements (including a shelter) if you are a victim of your circumstances, but it's also possible that a family court judge could order that your kids be removed from your care and placed with relatives or put into foster care if they are endagered in your custody (as proven by the choices you have made). CPS and judges take a dim view of parents who bury their heads in the sand and ignore obvious dangers, or who rationalize their way into staying in dangerous home environments.

You are a thinking adult who already sees there is danger. Regardless of the difficulties it may cause you, think of your kids' safety first and protect them. If that means that you move, do it. If that means that you report the behavior of others to police, so be it.

You risk so much more by doing nothing than by cating to protect yourself and your children. Don't forget that you are a role model for your children, and want to be a role model for countless other children.
