Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Embezzelment under $1000
I have been on parole over 2 years and have now been charged with Embezzlement under $1000. In Michigan that is suppose to be a misdemeanor, but due to my record they issued a felony warrant. I'm 25 yrs old, almost done with college, and can't afford a lawyer. Can they do this? I am scared to turn myself in and have no idea what is going to happen. please help.

You can't afford a lawyer? You think you can afford to go back to prison rather than affording a lawyer?
If you aren't willing to work to pay a lawyer, you might be forced to settle for a court appointed lawyer. If you're willing to take that chance, go right ahead. My recommendation is to work and borrow to hire an aggressive, tough and experienced lawyer to fight for you.

Embezzlement of $200-$999 when you have a prior embezzlement conviction can be charged as a felony. See MCL 750.174(3)(a) and MCL 750.174(4)(b).
Also, several events of embezzlement can be "aggregated" (lumped together) to get the amount over the dollar limit. so, if you took $50 out of the till 20 times, that could be charged as Embezzlement of $1,000 or more.
