Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Fines

Why is that fines in criminal cases often exceed the statutory provisions for the charges? I have a friend who was recently convicted of a crime and is serving a three month sentence. In addition to the jail term, he has been given fines in the amount of $1000. According to the statute under which he was charged, the sentence for his crime is up to 2 years in jail and/or a $500 fine. Is there any legal remedy against this?

Re: Fines

Are you sure the entire amount of $1,000.00 is fines? He may have received a fine for $500.00, plus (court costs, attorney fees for court appointed attorney, victim impact fees, and state fees) which could easily be another $500.00. Also, a restitution order may accompany his case if there are any damages associated with the crime committed.
