Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

I have a friend who was incarcerated for fifteen years for a murder he committed as a juvenile (he pled to 2nd degree murder). He was released in 1995 and has been working full-time ever since. For the past ten years, he has worked in a car supplier factory. Last week he was told the factory would be closing in 2013. My friend is concerned about being able to find a new job because of the conviction. He is a single father and sole supporter of his family. Is there way to expunge the conviction off his record so he is not hampered by this in his job search?

Under current Michigan law, you can set aside a conviction (expunge) if it carried a maximum penalty of Life ... and Second Degree Murder is Life felony ("life or any term of years" as the maximum penalty). See MCL 780.621(2).

You Can NOT expunge a conviction that carries a life sentence.
