Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Furnishing Alcohol To Minors

I had a birthday party and Saturday and we purchased a small keg for some of my friends and myself (I turned 22). I invited a bunch of my friends, most of which were over 21 and they used the keg. There were some people who were not 21 years of age who also came and we asked them to refrain from using the keg as we didn't want any issues... We used special colored cups so we knew who was to have access to the keg.

Many of them may have brought their own alcohol or showed up already intoxicated. Needless to say; we had 5 undercover Michigan State police officers knock on the door, one of the people opened the door and they walked in. They then sought me out and informed me that since there were drunks kids under 21 in my home, and alcohol in my home, I would have to appear in court for Furnishing Alcohol to Minors.

They found (to my knowledge) about 6 intoxicated kids under 21, out of the 25 people at the party. While I don't believe they got beer from my keg, I can't be 100% sure.

What do you suggest I do? I don't have a lot of money to go and take this to court. I contacted the free legal aid people on campus and unfortunately its been done away with for the time being. Any suggestions? the infraction is MCL 436.1701

I suggest that you and your friends chip in to retain an attorney to represent you and try to avoid a criminal conviction.
