Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Can a home-owner be charged for a tenents crimes
My house was recently raided by michigan state police, they had a warrent for narcotics. I have a tenet that rents out my basement, he had a 1/2 pound of pot and less than two grams of cocaine. Question: Can the police charge me (the homeowner) with the drugs that were in his living area?

As a former narcotics prosecutor I can say from first hand experience that there is a big difference between charging someone and convicting someone. But to answer your question: yes, they could charge you if they felt there was sufficient evidence to show that you had dominion and control over the area in question.
