My identity has been stolen or mistaken

What can I do to avoid going to an arraignment & pretrial due to my identity being stolen or mistaken?

I recieved a notice to appear in court for an offence I did not commit, on a person I do not know and in a city where I do not go. Upon recieving the notice, I called the court and was informed I was being charged with malicious destruction of property because I was named in the police report. I don't know if the:

- real suspect gave my name falsely,

- victim gave an incorrect name, or

- victim gave the right name and the

notice was mistakenly sent to me

because I share the same name as

the real suspect.

I called the prosucutor's office to complain and was told the only thing I could do is get a lawyer and show up to court. I called the public defender's office and was told to show up to court and plead not guilty. I was unable to contact the officer who took the report. Is there anything that can be done to inform the court and have them correct this error before the court appearance?
