Is a lawyer needed at a first arrest arraignment?

My 17 year old son was caught in school with a pocket knife that was less than 3 inches long. He is scheduled for an arraigment in front of a magistrate at the end of the month. He was suspended from school for 5 days and not expelled. Is it necessary to have a lawer present for the arraignment?

You are always best served with a lawyer as soon as possible. Police and investigarors are always looking for confessions, and have ways of getting admissions against interest.
