It is not illegal to write a letter to a judge in an effort to inform the judge of things to consider at sentencing. The judge, however, is not required to read any letters sent to him or her and many times, especially before conviction, will either destroy them without reading them or pass them on to the attorneys without reading them. Now, attempting to influence a judge in other ways could lead to trouble but for the most part, the best thing to do is speak to the party's attorney and express your concerns. The lawyers will usually present the information they feel is most important to the judge at the appropriate times.
