Re: legit
It is most likely a scam. I have recently talked to several individuals that have fell for such scams. Most involve phony lotto or sweepstakes contests, in which the scammer sends a check for $4,000.00. Scammer tells person that it is the initial payment to set-up an account for the remainder of the winnings. Then the scammer request that the person cash the check then send only $1,500 cash through Western Union to cover taxes and other fees. Only to have the scammer get $1,500 and access to the persons bank account information.
If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is too good to be true.
Re: legit
Why would you even THINK that this was legitimate??!
Think for a moment: Why can't this other person cash the check for him/herself? Why is this other person sending blind email solicitations to find a willing check-casher?
There's an old saying: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Have you looked at www.snopes.com yet to see if an email like this has previously been looked into? This web site is a good resource for debunking urban myths. In your search query, use a few of the most important words or terms from the email (not the whole thing!). Odds are, they have something in their database about a similar message.
If you find that it is a scam, you can report it to the Michigan Attorney General's consumer protection division. The AG's web site is at www.michigan.gov/ag .
Re: legit
Definitely not legitimate - this is a scam. The checks will turn out to be bad, and you'll have already sent them their money and you'll be out the entire amount. If the perso was legit, why wouldn't they cash their own checks?
This scam has been around for years. Wake up.
