Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Loitering ticket

My friend got a loitering ticket in a high drug area. He had no drugs on him. His ticket has him going to court on the date given. What is the range on his ticket costing him?

Re: Loitering ticket

Your question cannot be answered as written because you do not say whether the charge is written under state law or local ordinance (which might affect the max. fines possible), what county and court and judge the case is in front of, what the defendant's prior criminal record is, etc. All of those variables (and more) have to be weighed in answering your question.

The most important question, though, is where the charge is pending and what judge has the case. Some courts have "fine schedules" that give judges some standardized amounts of fine to order, but judges ultimately have discretion within the maximum penalty under the law (e.g., $100 fine maximum, %500 fine maximum, etc.). So, if you have Judge Smith, you might expect the standard/scheduled fines + routine court costs ... but if you have Judge Jones, past experience might show that that judge sentences harsher or less harsher than the norm.

You might get a better/quicker answer by contacting the actual court clerk's office that has the case and ask what the max fines are, and what the usual court costs are. (Many court costs are automatic and do not depend on the charge or defendant.)
