Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

How Long Can They Keep Him Hanging?

I have a brother-in-law who has been accused by a former neighbor who babysat his granddaughter of sexually abusing the 5-year old. He denies it, but the authorities made him move out of the house while the case is investigated. This happened a week ago, and he still hasn't been charged with anything. How long can the authorities keep him hanging without charging him? There's a lot more I could say about the situation and what it's done to his family, but I'd just like to know how long they can say they're investigating it before they have to reach a decision? If I may ask another queston, if he's charged and goes to trial can his attorney raise questons about his accuser's credibility? Thanks!
