Michigan has a crime called Unlawfully Driving Away an Automobile (UDAA). You can read its language at www.michiganlegislature.org ... search for MCL 740.413.

UDAA's maximum statutory penalty is 5 years in prison. But, if the defendant has prior felony convictions, the "max" could be higher if the defendant is also convicted as a habitual offender (7-1/2 yrs with one prior felony; 10 yrs with 2 priors; and up to Life with 3 or more prior felonies).

I'm sure that this answer is more responsive and helpful to you than that first attorney's reply.
