Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
non hiring by employers for a misdemenor conviction
In 2000 I plead quilty to an illegal entry charge to avoid any stress associated with fighting it. I went to an employment agency today and was told that employers won't hire anyone in the clerical field that has a felony or misdemenor charge within the last 5 years. Is this true, legal?? Since I plead guilty can I sue the complaintants for causing my inability to obtain employment in my field? Children lied and blew the event out of porportion to their very, very intoxicated parents when they got home. I have a rare disease called Cushings. I get physically ill when placed under stress. I try to avoid it if possible. That is why I did not fight the charge.

Re: non hiring by employers for a misdemenor conviction
If an employer decides he will not you hire based on a misdemeanor conviction, that is his choice. There's nothing "illegal" about that. However, why did you plead guilty if you feel that you were not guilty? Did you have an attorney? If not, hire one who can possibly reopen the case and get a better result for you. Good luck!
