Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Paying Probation

If a person has various court fines to pay as part of there terms for probation, will they go to jail if it all is not paid. My friend has misdemeanor probation and he has paid the restitution, but he lost his job and is unable to pay the rest of the probation fines and court cost. He has abided by the rest of the terms and is seeking employment. He is also in college. Can he get extra time to pay the cost, or will he have to go to jail. It is not clear on the court papers it says something like if not paid by the date he can go to jail for 30 days but it also says something about 56 days to pay from the due date. Iam not sure if all courts in Mich. have this, but in general are people allowed extra time to pay. Especially with his circumstances of being laid off and a poor economy.

Paying Probation

Some judges will grant extra time to pay. Your friend should try to work out a payment plan with the probation officer. If that doesn't work, your friend's lawyer can get the issue back in front of the judge to ask for more time.
