Can you put fliers in mailboxes?

I am putting fliers in peoples mailboxes, but recently someone told me this was a federal

crime, is it? If it is can I put fliers on doorknobs?

What you were told is true - you cannot use a U.S. mail faciluty for your private use. The door is okay, as long as there aren't other issues with regard to trepassing.
