Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Responsibility of Co-Signor in Criminal Case

We are concerned about my mother-in-law's connection with her grandson. She co-sgned a car loan for him a year ago. Now we suspect that he is stealing and doing/selling drugs from the vehicle.

She has been advised of our concerns about his actions, but she has chosen to believe that he is innocent. What are the possible legal ramifications on her if he is arrested for selling drugs from the vehicle or using the vehicle to transport stolen items?

Urge the grandson to stop selling drugs from, and transporting stolen property in, the car. Alternatively, urge him to sell enough drugs and stolen property to pay off the car before he is inevitably caught. When caught, the state would bring an asset forfeiture action against him, taking the car, and your poor old mother-in-law will be on the hook for the car loan.

Good luck.
