Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan
Retail Fraud in MI
I am a 19 year old male college student that just got caught stealing a $30 video game from a Super Kmart. I realize this was a mistake, and I cooperated with the LP fully. The police came and wrote me ticket, as opposed to taking me to jail. M appearance is scheduled at the 28th District Court on May 19th. I know for a fact that my family does not have the money to pay for an attorney, and neither do I. My questions are:
Regardless of their ability to prove the case, what should I plead?
I understand that the maximum sentence is 93 days and fines, but what is the maximum in fines and court costs that I am likely to pay?
Is there any other advice you can give me about a general plan of action?
I appreciate any and all advice.

Ask the court for a court appointed lawyer to assist you.

Your general plan of action is to find a way to find an attorney in much the same way that you'd find the way to hire a surgeon if you needed surgery. Criminal court is not a good place for beginners.
