Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

Retail Theft

Ok I don't know how to explain this. I went to my local grocery store and was buying some food. Well I realized before I got to check out that I didn't have enough money so I took a $2.58 pack of turkey. This was a week ago (7-11-08). Would I have been caught by now and if I do get caught what will happen. I'm 20 and this would be my first offense ever.

Re: Retail Theft

You have apparent remorse for your theft and that may be the extent of your punishment.

If you were caught and convicted, most judges would order you to stay out of that store for a year. Do this anyway!

It's highly unlikely that anything at all will come of this. If you are contacted, call me.

Re: Retail Theft

It doesn't sound like you got caught this time although it is possible that the store might review their security camera tapes in the future.

Think about a $2.58 pack of turkey costing you a criminal conviction on your record for the rest of your life. This would label you a thief forever. It would be difficult for you to get a meaningful job, etc.

Don't let this happen again. It's not worth the consequences.
