It depends upon the statement, and the effect an attempt at retraction will have. If it is in a police report and you're the defendant, you need to have counsel assist you in figuring out what that will do to your defense. If you are a witness, it's easier, but you need to have a reason. In either case, you should be prepared to show why your second statement is more credible than your first and why.
