Sex offenders registration act

My son was 19 at the time he was convicted of 2nd degree sexual misconduct in 9/94. At that time nor since has he be involved in the court system. He was sentenced to 5 years probation but because he didn't report to his probation officer he was arrested at his home in 3/01 and sentenced to 90 days in jail for the original conviction after which the case would be closed and he would not have to comlete the probation. A month or so ago he received a letter stating that he had to register as a sex offender with the State Police. Was his conviction date moved to 3/01 because of the new sentence?

No, his conviction date wasn't moved, but he still has to register since he was on probation for the offense after 1995(see below).

SEX OFFENDERS REGISTRATION ACT (EXCERPT)

Act 295 of 1994

28.723 Individuals required to be registered.

Sec. 3.

(a) An individual who is convicted of a listed offense after October 1, 1995.

(b) An individual convicted of a listed offense on or before October 1, 1995 if on October 1, 1995 he or she is on probation or parole, committed to jail, committed to the jurisdiction of the department of corrections, or under the jurisdiction of the juvenile division of the probate court or the department of social services for that offense or is placed on probation or parole, committed to jail, committed to the jurisdiction of the department of corrections, placed under the jurisdiction of the juvenile division of the probate court or family division of circuit court, or committed to the department of social services or family independence agency after October 1, 1995 for that offense.
