Legal Question in Criminal Law in Michigan

unemployment compensation provided to an inmate

Is it illegal for a convicted felon to receive inemployment compensation while he's held in "detention"? Would a person who sends the felon the check be committing any crime in the state of MI?

Depends. If you are receiving a check that you were already entitled to prior to incarceration then no crime. If however you are still claiming benefits while in prison then you are committing fraud and can be charged either civilly or criminally by the state. In order to continue to be eligible to receive unemployment checks you must show that you are available for work. Locked up does not make you available. Any person assisting you with obtaining the checks while you are locked up will also be guilty of a crime providing they know what they are doing is illegal.
