Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Michigan
I was qualified for the job, but married.
applied for an office job, had 2 interviews. during second interview was told by office interviewer they were impressed by resume, that i would be the one she would like to hire. during interview, owner comes in to ask a few questions, was impressed by my references, etc. asks if married. I said yes.asks me what my spouse does for a living. I said what spouse did (which is the same type of business that owner has and for which i am applying) owner then tells me of problems with past employees in my situation. Said it would have to thought about. owner leaves, office interviewer tells me she will speak to owner to convey that I would not do what past employee had done. My spouse is doing that type of work because it is our only source of income, i explained this to owner and said if i get this job then my spouse can quit his current jobs and get a different one. He hates doing that kind of work. office interviewer assured me they would be calling and said she would talk to owner because she really wanted me to be the hire. no call, letter 2 weeks later saying not hired. Is it fair to not hire me because of what me spouse does? if I would have lied I know I would be working there right now.

Re: I was qualified for the job, but married.
Absolutely go to the EEOC and file a claim, immediately.
You were clearly discriminated against on account of marital status.
Write down every conversation about the job, whom they hired, dates, times and take it to your local EEOC office and file. You will have to wait while they "investigate" then issue your Right To Sue letter (unless of course they actually DO a thorough investigation), then you can go into federal court.
