Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Michigan

speaking spanish in the office

Myself and another lady speak Spanish and we were talking to each other in the office in Spanish until the boss said we couldnt do it any more because 2 coworkers cant understand what we are saying. I want to know if they can tell us which language we can or cannot use? The place where I work gives free Spanish classes, that I take, because they want us to learn Spanish because there is a need in this institution to help people who only speak Spanish and I need the practice speaking and hearing.

Re: speaking spanish in the office

If you are in Michigan, the employer generally has the right to do whatever they want, unless the employee is protected by a specific statute. Perhaps in your case, you could argue that you are being discriminated against on the basis of your national origin. Try to file a claim with the EEOC.
