break an apartment lease
My senior parents (78) had to move quickly into an assisted living retirement home. They had lived in their apartment for approximately 20 years. We notified the apartment only about two weeks before we had to move them...mother is legally blind, father has alzheimers. Apartment is charging them over $4000 for breaking the lease. Do we have any recourse as it was imperitive for their health & safety to move?

Re: break an apartment lease
The question you raise comes up quite a bit in my practice. You do have recourse.
Under Michigan Compiled Law 554.601a A tenant, of your parent's age, may terminate a lease if:
(b) The tenant becomes incapable during the lease term of living independently, as certified by a physician in a notarized statement.
