Re: Becoming a legal guardian
You must file a Petition in the Wayne County Probate Court requesting to be appointed. The Petition fee is $150. Anyone who has the same level, or higher, priority to serve as Guardian must be given notice of the Petition and the Hearing date that the Court will schedule. The Court will also appoint a Guardian Ad Litem (Guardian for the case) to see your aunt, to talk with her and to help the Court with its decision to appoint you as Guardian. The Hearing is usually scheduled approximately 3-4 weeks after the Petition is filed (unless there is an emergency). If your aunt contests the appointment, the Court will generally appoint an attorney to represent her. If there is anyone else who has the same or greater priority who contests your appointment the Court will determine who, in its opinion, will be best.

Go down to your local probate court and ask for a petition.
The forms are also available from the SCAO website, I believe.
Then, spend an hour with an attorney so you understand fully your responsibilities and the accounting that you need to be prepared to do with respect to her affairs.
