Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

16 year old rights

Hello,

my family relocated to Virginia this summer from Michigan.

My 16 year old daughter thinks that we (her parents) have no right to tell her anymore what to do and is under the impression that it is her right to move out and live on her own without any financial support whatsoever.

What are her rights as a 16 year old ? And what are our rights as parents ?

Can she just move out and do whatever ?

Re: 16 year old rights

I'm not sure about the law in Virginia, but in Michigan she can petition the probate court to emancipate her from her parents. She would have to show that she has the ability and the means to support and care for herself. For more info., please contact my office at (248)851-3171.

Go to yhe police and fill out a missing persons report and tell the cops where you think she is. They will then enlist the support of the police in the other state to pick her up. Then, you will have won the power struggle and alienated her perhaps for the rest of her life. It may be wiser to use less of your power and tell her that she is welcome back when she chooses, that you only want what is best for her and leave it at that for now. Bill Stern
