Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
Alimony in Michigan
About 3 years ago my brother divorced his wife of 23 years. The have three adopted children. At the time he was employed with a decent income. He had a lousy lawyer and wound up paying alimony and she got custody of the daughter who is the youngest. The oldest boy was older then 18 and the other boy was about to turn 18.
The decree said it was nonnegotiable. Well, guess what, things changed since. The middle boy has now turned 18. The younger daughter is now living with him. The wife now remarried. He lost his job and has been on unemployment for several weeks. The alimony consumes over half his UI, he has applied for food stamps and regularly visits the food bank. He can no longer afford his rent and is moving to a cheaper apartment. She has separated from her short time marriage and is living in her own apartment.
My brother would be OK if he did not have to pay or could adjust the alimony, but is told that there is nothing that can be done. Is this true? So much for justice, again.

Re: Alimony in Michigan
In what county is your brother's case? And before what judge? Without that information no lawyer can answer your questions.
