Arrested for Child Support

My best friend's son was arrested in Florida on 10/5/03 on an arrest warrant from Michigan for non payment of child support. He was notified, in writing on 10/16/03 that if Michigan did not pick him up within 72 hours, he would be released. On 10/20/03 he was brought in to court and told that the warrant had been reissued and then on 10/21/03, he was picked up by Michigan. He was informed that he will be in jail for 4 years. He never saw an attorney. How is this possible?
