Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
Buying a home before the marriage
My finance and I recently decided to purchase a home. Because he is a veteran, we are going to use a VA loan, however because we are not married yet, I cannot be on the loan and therefore, at his request, will not be on the title.
I am also working and do contribute money to the relationship and will be paying for half of the mortgage.
We are talking about drafting a document clearly stating who will be responsible for paying for the mortgage. We are planning to include contingencies for one of us losing a job, leaving the workforce for children, or a career change that results in a decrease of money. We would also have statements regarding refinance of the mortgage and what would happen in case of divorce.
Is it better for us to have a lawyer prepare this document for us, or can we both sit down and write it, and then sign it in the presence of a lawyer who can than witness and notarize it?

Don't be penny wise and pound foolish. Have an experienced family law lawyer draft the prenuptual agreement. If you wish, give me a call to discuss it further. Bill Stern 248-353-9400
