Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
Name change after divorce is final
At the time of my divorce, I did not choose to change my last name back to my maiden name, and therefore it was not included in the judgement. Now, a year after my divorce was final, I wish to change back to my maiden name. I read on another legal site that I can simply start using my maiden name again, and just change any necessary documents. Do I need to do a name change through the court, or is it not necessary? If so, I could use advice as to where to begin the process.

To change your name legally would take a court order. Because your divorce is over, your attorney would bring a proceeding in the Probate Court. There are various procedural and statutory requirments that your attorney will follow.

You must get a court order for a name change. You will want it for the Social Security Administration and the Secretary of State, and other agencies.
It is easy to get, and you can do it yourself without an attorney. Most lawyers will charge no more than $500 if you don't want to go through the hassle. It requires a court appearance.
