Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Changing Legal Custody

I was divorced 4 years ago and am the custodial parent and share joint legal custody of my two minor children. I am seeking information on how to gain full legal custody, change my children's last name to my maiden name, and dissolve the arreage of child support my ex-husband owes (aprrox $37,000). He is a drug addict, has several convictions, is in violation of probation, and recently told me on a voice mail message that he never wants to see me or the children again (which I saved on disk). I am not financially able to pay enormous lawyer fees, and need to know what I can do on my own to start this process.

Re: Changing Legal Custody

The easiest way to do this is to contact the ex and have him agree to all the things you mentioned in exchange for release from child support obligations. Even then, the judge may not grant your wishes. Once your ex agrees however, see a lawyer to draft an appropriate order. William S. Stern 248-353-9400
