Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Do I have any Right to the Child

I have been married for almost 2 years. My wife had a child before we got together. The father was a deadbeat and moved to Missouri. He is currently $5,000.00 in arrears on his child support. I have raised the child, with my wife, from about the age of 6 months. If we were to get divorced, do I have any rights to the child? I have raised him like my own son, and love him just the same. I don't want to lose him.

Re: Do I have any Right to the Child

To Whom It May Concern:

This is in response to your email of September 26, 2001, which this office received on November 6, 2001.

Your question sits on the crux as to whether you have formally adopted this child. Otherwise, you may wish to try to petition the court to determine paternity.

Thank you for your question.

Very truly yours,

Nichols & Eberth, P.C.
