Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
Should child support help pay for dance classes?
My husband pays $400 per month in support, plus half the day care cost and insurance for his daughter in MI. This was a mutually agreed upon amount in his divorce. Now his ex wife is asking us to contribute to the cost of her signing their daughter up for dance classes, including the shoes, etc. she will need? Shouldn't these extra costs be coming out of the child support she already recieves or should we pony up the extra money?

I would say your husband pays plenty. I would tell his ex to use the child support for those items.
Re: Should child support help pay for dance classes?
If the child support order comes from Michigan, there is no requirement that your husband pay anything more for dance classes and shoes, unless that's already in the judgment of divorce. I cannot advise you about the law in any other state since I am not licensed to practice anywhere other than Michigan.

$400/mo. is very little child support, and I am sure the mother contributes much more than $400/mo. for the support of the child. It is very common for parents to share the cost of extracurricular activities for the child even though neither parent is required to pay for these activities in Michigan.
