Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Common Law Marriage

Is a common law marriage recognized in Michigan? It was my understanding that it has not been legal since 1957 or so. If it is, how long must the relationship have existed for it to be viewed as a marriage? Any other legitimizing factors? Legal rights of the so called common law spouse? If it is not legal in this state, are there any states where it is?

Thanks

Re: Common Law Marriage

You are correct that common law marriage is not recognized in Michigan. I think that there are a couple of states in the South that may still recognize it--try an internet search.
