Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

Does common-law marriages still exist in MI?

I have lived with my current boyfriend for five years. We moved to MI two years ago and things are not going well. I want to leave but feel I should not be left empty handed. He makes 5x as much as I do and has a house and other assets. Am I entitled to anything?

Re: Does common-law marriages still exist in MI?

Greetings; No, common-law marriage does not exist in Michigan. You are only entitled to one half of jointly owned property or in some cases a share of the property if you contributed financially to its acquisition. In effect the state of Michigan is punishing you for living together and not getting married. Good luck, Atty. Trichler; www.trichler.com
