Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

I want to get custody of my nephew who has been in the custody of a friend of his mother for about 6 years. This friend has since been trying to cut off all contact between the child and the family including the his mother.

If she is your niece, you would be eligible to petition for relative adoption. However, you will need guardianship to have standing. This can be very complicated and it is strongly suggested that you retain a lawyer experienced in guardianship and relative adoptions.
