Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

My daughter shares custody of her 1 yr old son. There is a custody battle. Neither one of them are doing the right thing...cps is involved and its in Holly, michigan.my daughter has agreed to give me temporary custody if the state wants to take him, but i am in new york. Do i have to get permission from the father!? He has physical abuse record. Please help! I dont know if i need a ny lawyer or Michigan lawyer or even if i need one!
