Divorce

In Michigan when Divorce papers have been filed, is that considered a legal seperation.

No. If you want to be separated while the divorce is pending, you have to ask the court for whatever help you need, such as spousal support (alimony), child support, custody, etc. There's really no such thing as a "legal separation" but two people can be separated, yet still married, and one person can be required to pay for the living expenses of another, most of the time on a temporary basis until the divorce is finalized.

First it depends upon what or who is asking if you are legally separated. More importantly, a legal separation doesn't exist in Michigan. We have a form of it called Separate Maintaince, but is is not technically a legal separation. Generally in Michigan nobody can treat you as separated until a judgment of divorce or separate maintainence is entered--the last thing that happens, not the first.
