Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan
I was divorced in 2005 in oakland county, Michigan. The divorce has caused me immense emotional trauma. I have been suffering from anxiety attacks, panic attacks and severe clinical depression ever since the divorce papers were served. I became suicidal. My depression was so severe I had to undergo Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT--electric shock, basically) and was hospitalized several times including a mental health care facility for 6 months.
My depression and anxiety attacks continue and I am undergoing treatment and therapy to this day. I have lost my thinking capacity, and am semi-retarded now due to my mental illnesses. My day-to-day functioning is minimal at best.
I am now on total disability which actually started in 2004 when he served me divorce papers.
It has been 6 years and I continue to have medical issues caused by the divorce.
I was a perfectly normal, intelligent, healthy person before divorce, had a job for 20 years, raised two children that went to ivy-league colleges and were national merit scholars.
Can I sue my ex-husband for all the emotional and psychological trauma and medical problems caused by the divorce?
Can I recover any money for medical bills incurred after the divorce, because the divorce was the cause for my illness??

No. I would say he has a right to file for divorce under Michigan law and this is not the basis for a lawsuit. If he assaulted you or committed some other tort, that is a different story.
