Legal Question in Family Law in Michigan

What am I entitled to?

My wife has moved away and has said she wants a divorce. I am trying to settle it simply but she is asking for nearly everything. We were married only a year. What can she legally ask for and what am I legally obligated to offer her. I bought the house before the marriage. Is she entitled to any part of that? What about other marital ''property'' and what does it consist of?

To Whom It May Concern:

This is in response to your email of March 30, 2001, which this office received on June 5, 2001.

Generally speaking and without some special circumstances, each party in a one year marriage takes back what he or she brought into the marriage.

If you would like to discuss this further, you are welcome to call me at (313) 561-5700.

Sincerely,

Charles L. Nichols
